- Trump has repeatedly signalled that he wants the Arctic island
- The meeting in London will focus on security in Europe
COPENHAGEN: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was due on Tuesday to meet UK counterpart Keir Starmer, as she seeks European support to counter US President Donald Trump鈥檚 remarks about taking over Greenland.
The meeting in London will focus on 鈥渟ecurity in Europe,鈥 according to Frederiksen鈥檚 office.
While the statement did not specifically mention Greenland 鈥 which is an autonomous Danish territory 鈥 or the United States, Frederiksen was quoted saying: 鈥淲e need a stronger Europe that contributes more to NATO and stands more on its own.鈥
鈥淎t the same time, we must do our part to maintain the transatlantic partnership that has been the foundation for peace and prosperity since World War II,鈥 Frederiksen added.
Trump has repeatedly signalled that he wants the Arctic island 鈥 which is strategically important and is believed to hold large untapped mineral and oil reserves 鈥 to become part of the United States.
In an interview with broadcaster Fox News over the weekend, US Vice President J.D. Vance said Greenland was 鈥渞eally important鈥 to US 鈥渘ational security.鈥
鈥淔rankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, it鈥檚 not doing its job and it鈥檚 not being a good ally,鈥 Vance said.
On Monday, Frederiksen insisted Denmark was 鈥渙ne of the United States鈥 most important and best allies.鈥
Last week, she visited Paris and Berlin to seek backing from the European Union鈥檚 traditional powerhouses against Trump鈥檚 threats.
A day after Trump was sworn in as president, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede insisted that Greenlanders 鈥渄on鈥檛 want to be American.鈥
